SSTI issues report on higher education R&D expenditures by state

The State Science and Technology Institute, better known as SSTI, has published a summary of higher education R&D expenditures by state from 2008 through 2017. You can find the entire list here (Higher Ed R&D Expenditures).

How is Tennessee doing? It is up 42.1 percent during the 10-year period. That ranks the Volunteer State 18th among the 50 in overall percentage growth, not including the District of Columbia and Guam which were also included in SSTI’s totals. The country as a whole grew 38.9 percent, so Tennessee was above average.

The national leader continues to be California. It accounted for $9.2 billion in 2017, roughly 12.2 percent of the national total, and about 10 percent of the new funds for higher education R&D between 2016 and 2017 went to that state, too.
