Five more small businesses added to DOE’s SBV pilot program at ORNL

ORNL_outlineFive companies, the closest from Blacksburg, VA, have been selected to collaborate with Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the latest round of the Small Business Vouchers (SBV) pilot initiative.

Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and described in this September 2015 teknovation.biz article, the program is designed to facilitate access to the wealth of expertise available at many of the DOE laboratories across the country. The ultimate goal is to help bring next generation energy technologies to market faster than would otherwise be possible.

Prior to yesterday’s announcement, 76 small businesses were tapping into the expertise of 12 DOE labs. Of those companies, 15 had been selected to work with ORNL, including Nano Elements that was selected in the second round of applications.

Five additional small businesses have been added to the mix at ORNL as part of the latest solicitation. They are among a total of 38 new companies joining the program across the country.

The new additions at ORNL are:

  • FluxTeq, the Blacksburg company works on the development of an inexpensive and non-invasive BTU meter providing accurate thermal energy measurements in commercial and industrial buildings;
  • Redux Power of  Rochester, NY that will work with ORNL to develop an integrated, lower cost roll-to-roll manufacturing process for battery cells;
  • SkyCool Systems from San Francisco that will work with ORNL to improve the efficiency of fluid-cooling panels used in commercial refrigeration systems such as walk-in freezers in a range of climate zones;
  • Synvitrobio, another San Francisco-based small business focused on the development of analytical tools to convert renewable biomass to higher-order chemicals mevalonate and vanillin; and
  • Telluride Energy, located in the Colorado community with the same name, that is tapping ORNL to identify new opportunities for hydropower at existing non-powered dams and water treatment plants.
